Carved in (Mina) Stone: MoMA PS1’s Greek Food Hit

December 22, 2019

NEW YORK – It’s tough being a restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art’s Queens, New York branch but Mina Stone looked to her Greek heritage for the design, mint-and-magenta, and the food that she said was aimed at bringing home cooking to people browsing through contemporary culture.
Speaking to Healthyish, she said she wanted to take a chance too and not play it safe, especially in a place where art goes. “I’m out of my safe world of people who have eaten my food before,” Stone says with a laugh. “That’s what’s so exciting about the museum: I’m opened up to the world – the young, old, tourists, New Yorkers, whoever it might be.”
“Even on the gloomiest winter afternoon, Mina’s oversized windows beam light over tables dotted with gold-rimmed plates of crusty bread and cloud-like whipped feta,” the site said in a review noting there’s no pre-packaged sandwiches.
Stone’s 2015 cookbook, Cooking for Artists, has found a rabid fan base among art and food lovers, it was noted and she said she and her husband asked their designer to channel their Greek heritage, not to make a taverna but “visual calm.”
