South Florida’s Greek community mourns the loss of Antonio Tsialas, 18, a Cornell student who died October 26 shortly after leaving a fraternity get together.

Tsialas, of Miami, was reported missing by his parents on October 26, stated Cornell official Ryan Lombardi, vice president for student and campus life.

“His body was recovered this evening inside the Fall Creek gorge,” Lombardi wrote. “A full investigation of the circumstances of his death is underway; no foul play is suspected.”

Tsialas was an undeclared first-year student in the College of Arts & Sciences and was described as a thoughtful and smart student, added Lombardi. He was actively involved with the soccer team and served as a campus tour guide.

Last year, Tsialas graduated from the Ransom Everglades school in Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood.

“He was an outstanding student, an AP scholar, a debater, a member of the math team, and a trusted goalie on the soccer team,” said Ransom Everglades Head of School Penny Townsend in a statement. “It was fitting that Antonio was a goalie, as he always seemed to be watching over his teammates.”

In New York, Cornell University held remembrance services for Tsialas on Oct. 29 in the chapel of Anabel Taylor Hall.

In Miami, a viewing took take place on November 3 at the Caballero Rivero Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 4, at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

In lieu of flowers, Tsialas’ family requests that donations be directed to Ransom Everglades School to help endow a memorial scholarship.

“The Antonio Tsialas ’19 Scholarship” will support students with a passion for math and soccer, recalling important aspects of Antonio’s life and interests,” a Ransom official said.

“Our deepest sympathies go to Antonio’s family,” said Father Spiro Bobotas, of St. Sophia’s. “May his memory be eternal.”
