ASTORIA – Popular singer Dimitris Mpasis performed at Anemos Restaurant in Astoria on October 19 for an enthusiastic crowd to benefit the Greek School of Plato and its construction project.
Singer Rena Tsapelas opened the show, performing well-known hits from the Greek popular music repertoire. Mpasis then took to the stage and impressed the audience with hits from throughout his career.
The musicians accompanying Mpasis were Achilleas Wastor on piano, Yiannis Sinanis on bouzouki, and the band New York Gypsy All Stars. They performed an instrumental medley of Mpasis top hits shortly before he made his entrance.
After performing three songs, Mpasis took the opportunity to welcome the crowd and thanked them for being part of the financial support for the construction of the cultural center for the Greek School of Plato.
“The purpose is sacred. Your presence here contributes to this end. But let’s not say too many words, let the songs speak for themselves,” Mpasis said.
The Greek singer performed his greatest hits, inspiring many in the crowd to get out on the dance floor.
Mpasis also gave a moving tribute in song to the late legendary singer Dimitris Mitropanos who he noted passed away seven years ago, but whose music lives on.
The show and the dancing continued well into the early hours of the morning. Ismail Lumanovski on clarinet especially impressed the audience along with the rest of the New York Gypsy All Stars, Tamer Pinarbasi on kanun, Panagiotis Andreou on bass and Engin Kaan Gunniedin on drums.
