NEW YORK – Archbishop Elpidophoros of America appointed Fr. Andreas Vithoulkas chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Fr. Andreas is currently the presiding priest of the Resurrection of Christ parish of Brookville, NY on Long Island.

He told the National Herald that “I am honored and humbled to be asked by His Eminence our Archbishop Elpidophoros to serve at the Archdiocese. I told His Eminence without any reservation that I am willing to serve anywhere he wants me to.”

Fr. Andreas is married to presbytera Anthoula and they have two twin sons, Nickolas and Petros. Fr. Andreas was born in Flushing, New York and attended St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and its parochial school growing up. His father Nicholas emigrated to the United States from Piraeus, and his mother from the island of Kos in the Dodecanese. He has four siblings: two sisters, Catherine and Thalia, and two brothers, Alex and Constantine.

His family eventually moved to Manhasset and he graduated from Manhasset high school. During that time he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and as he told The National Herald, “I felt my calling to the Holy Priesthood.”

He attended Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and received his B.A. in Religious Studies and his Masters of Divinity in 1998. He said that “upon my graduation I was engaged to my wife, Anthoula Hatzimihalis, whose parents are Petros and Maria Hatzimihalis, who are also from the island of Kos.”

Fr. Andreas added that “Anthoula and I were married in 2001 and we were blessed with twin boys, Nikolas and Petros, who are 13 years old. After the birth of my sons, I decided to seek ordination to the Priesthood and was ordained to Holy Diaconate on June 9, 2007 and to the Holy Priesthood on July 1, 2007 by then Bishop Savvas of Troas who is currently the Metropolitan of Pittsburgh.”

After working for a period of time in the Chancellor’s office at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, he was assigned to the Cathedral of St. Paul in Hempstead, New York. His second assignment was to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Bridgeport, CT after which he was assigned to the Church of the Holy Resurrection in Brookville, New York.

Fr. Andreas will replace Bishop Andonios of Phasiane who has resigned. It is reminded here that Andonios had resigned twice in the past.
