Maloney on Proof GOP Strategist Helped Orchestrate Adding Census Question

May 30, 2019

NEW YORK – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), co-chair of the House Census Caucus and author of the 2020 Census IDEA Act, released the following statement in response to the revelation of documents showing that a Republican gerrymandering expert was the author of the census citizenship question:

“These documents are explicit proof of what we’ve been saying all along; the Trump Administration concocted false reasons to add the citizenship question to the 2020 Census purely for partisan political gain.

“We already know that Secretary Wilbur Ross lied about how the question got added to the survey. We already know that the Trump claim that this is needed to enforce the Voting Rights Act is a complete sham. And we already know that this question was added without any testing or the mandatory notification to Congress required by law.

“These documents are damning proof that this was always a plan to disenfranchise voters. The Administration’s actions are unconstitutional and un-American. This is another blatant attack on our democracy.”
