It does not take long after a mass shooting to have another massacre. Either here, or somewhere else in the world. This week we had two.

On Wednesday, two children, aged 17 and 25, killed five students and two school staffers near the capital of Brazil, Sao Paulo.

On Friday, a heavily armed young man, 28 years of age, stormed into two mosques as people were praying and shot indiscriminately for two minutes.

The tragic accounting: At least 49 dead –– and a large number wounded.

This tragic event occurred in New Zealand, a peaceful country where you do not expect such things.
And yet, nobody is safe anywhere any longer. Regardless of religion, color, or sex.

One reason for the large number of victims is the use of weapons designed for combat operations, but which can easily be purchased on the market.

I’m not talking about hunting rifles. I have friends who are hunters and I know that these people are absolutely no danger to anyone with their weapons. They are made for hunting and they use them only for hunting.

But I cannot understand – at all – the logic of making available for sale guns designed for war. What use do these weapons have on the streets of New York or any other city in the world?

We all understand why this is allowed.

The companies that manufacture them have great political influence .They spend large amounts of money on lobbyists and misinformation. The National Rifle Association (NRA) says it has 5 million members!

Let me ask you something: We know that because drugs kill, in large doses, it is forbidden to sell them freely on the streets and in shops.

The same is the case with the medications given to us by the doctor. We need a prescription.

So why, if we strictly regulate drugs and medicine, are people allowed to sell arms of military specifications in the cities and suburbs of the country when we know that sooner or later some madman will use them to kill masses of innocent people (49 people killed in one day – we don’t see such numbers even in the Afghanistan war).

On Thursday, however, there was a big step forward in the direction of controlling sales of these weapons.

The Supreme Court of Connecticut hit gun manufacturers hard.

Specifically, it has decided to allow lawsuits against the companies that manufactured the weapons used in the carnage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School where 26 people were killed, 20 of whom were children.

This decision is important, because at last there will be financial consequences for these companies. It may be become eventually economically unprofitable to sell these weapons to the public.

It will take years for the arms to be withdrawn from the market, if ever – but let’s make a start.
What has been done so far transgresses all logic. Completely.
