NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
Nancy Pelosi, the powerful Speaker of the House of Representatives, in an interview with the Washington Post, rightly, in my opinion, said she is “not for impeachment” of President Trump.
She justified her view as follows:
“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”
Given the political situation in the country today, with a significant proportion of the population – around 40% – supporting the President, the impeachment process would indeed be highly divisive and thus detrimental to the country without anything important being gained.
It is not even certain that Vice President Michael Pence would be much better than Trump.
Undoubtedly, the best solution is for the people to decide by their vote. Let Trump complete his term of office and be defeated – if he does get defeated – at the polls, if does run for re-election, as it now seems he will do.
That’s how democracies work.
The U.S. Constitution provides that in extreme cases Congress has the right and the obligation to remove a president. Article 2 (4) states: “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”
So there must be such a great crime that it falls into the above categories mentioned in the Constitution to remove a president.
Otherwise, a very bad precedent is created, where one party persecutes the other for political reasons.
President Trump long ago has transgressed established norms of presidential behavior, and he acts, and speaks often so outrageously, that we are no longer shocked by it. We have gotten used to it. And that is dangerous.
However, if nothing more serious is revealed, something really damaging to the interests of the country, than we know so far, then he should be left to complete his term.
Unless the Special Prosecutor, the New York State Attorney General, the Congressional Committees, Michael Cohen, or someone else reveals such a serious piece of news – a real bombshell – tangible and proven, that it will leave Congress no other choice than to remove him, according to the provisions of the Constitution.
