ATHENS – With Greece’s economic and austerity crisis nearing nine years, a survey has found that about 30 percent of Greek households have incomes under 10,000 euros ($33,894) and trying to survive despite repeated pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions.
The study was conducted by the research arm of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen & Merchants (GSEVEE) which found it wasn’t enough to cover their monthly expenses.
While most economic indexes appear improved over the recent period, nevertheless the GSEVEE study details the depth of the crisis that has affected workers, pensioners and the poor but not the rich, politicians or those hiding their money in secret foreign bank accounts to evade taxes.
The study, conducted in cooperation with the Marc firm, sampled 804 households around the country between Dec. 7-12, 2018, that also showed 3.9 percent of households reported a decrease in income for 2018, compared to 2017, while 48.9 percent (up from 35.6 percent) said their income situation was stabilizing some fore them.
