Assemblywoman Malliotakis Issues Statement on State of the State Address

January 17, 2019

NEW YORK – New York State Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (R, C, I -Brooklyn, Staten Island) released a statement on January 15 in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State Address.

“In Gov. Cuomo’s State of the State Address he called on the Legislature to make the 2% property tax cap permanent, but I was shocked to hear him say that New York City is not affected and won’t be included. This is a slap in the face when we have seen property tax levies increase 44% in the past five years to feed Mayor de Blasio’s insatiable and unsustainable appetite for spending.

“We can’t count on Mayor de Blasio to treat New York City homeowners fairly and with respect, and now it is clear we can’t count on the governor either. The state must lead and impose a cap so our residents aren’t forced to leave the communities they call home. Otherwise, we will continue to see more of our neighbors join the 48,000 residents who left New York last year.

“The governor spent a good portion of his time criticizing the federal tax plans and SALT, however the reason New York doesn’t benefit like the rest of the U.S. is because we have one of the highest tax burdens in the country. The governor should work with us to reduce the tax burden and the cost of living by capping property taxes in order to benefit homeowners and renters alike.”
