NEW YORK – The feast of the Epiphany was celebrated across the globe on January 6. The holiday commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ and the appearance of the Trinity, the Theophany. At Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Whitestone, parishioners filled the church for the service which was presided over by V. Rev. Archimandrite Dionysios Anagnostopoulos and Fr. George Anastasiou.
Following the service, the Philoptochos hosted a breakfast and the annual cutting of the vasilopita. The event raised funds to support the Philoptochos’ charitable efforts and included a raffle with many prizes such as gift baskets which were donated by Thea and George Tselekas.
Philoptochos President Margie Demetriou thanked all those in attendance including Xenis Thoma for the food and all those who helped prepare the breakfast as well as the ladies of the Philoptochos. Evgenia Papadakos donated the vasilopites which all had a lucky coin for each table, including one with a gold piece donated by the Gournelos family. The tsourekia for the French toast were donated by Artopolis.
Fr. Anagnostopoulos wished all the best to those celebrating their name day, including Foti Gazikas who has worked at the church for many years and Parish Council President Effie (Fotini) Karalekas. A cake was also brought out with candles and “Happy Birthday” was sung for Maria Skiadas, longtime member of the community and Direct Archdiocesan District National Philoptochos Society Board Member.
