Macron Lost His Bet with History

After his big somersault – volte face in his own language – the merely 40-year-old French President Emmanuel Macron has probably managed to prolong his stay in power, but he lost his bet with history.

When Macron assumed power, he was initially determined to implement his program – the reforms needed to make his country more competitive, to give a boost to its economy.

It was, or ought to have been, expected that the reforms would provoke reactions from the sectors affected.
