ATHENS – After several weeks out of action, Greece’s notorious anti-establishment Rouvikonas group struck again on Dec. 10, this time vandalizing the town hall in the neighborhood of Alimos on the Capital’s coast, protesting the death of a garbage collector in a Nov. 16 accident.
The group smashed windows and splashed red paint on the facade and then posted a message on its site saying it was done as “the first world day of action,” noting that other anarchist groups in 15 countries were staging similar protests in more than 60 cities.
Rouvikonas, which has attacked foreign embassies and offices of the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA that ironically is riddled with anarchist and terrorist supporters, said it would “not accept the breaking of people as the new normal,” adding that worksite accidents were due to “the crimes of employers and of those who plan and implement the policies which lead to them.”
That came in protest of the death of the 53-year-old garbage truck driver killed when his vehicle crashed in the northern suburb of Ano Liosia. That led to a walkout of his colleagues at the time who wanted an investigation of the accident and the death of another municipal worker who was hit by a car while working in the same area.
