Greek Youth Fire Survivors Send Solidarity Message to California

November 20, 2018

Greek youths who survived the deadly July 23 wildfires that killed 99 people in the seaside village of Mati northeast of Athens, and ravaged Neos Voutzas and Kokkino Limanaki send a message to California expressing their support for them as killer fires tore through the state.

The message was spread across four photos with youths holding placards. US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt, a California, retweeted a tweet by Spyros Litsas, Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Macedonia that showed the Greek youths’ message:
“Young people from #Mati, Attiki in #Greece where during last summer 100 people died from horrific wildfires, reach out to the people of #California, #USA during their time of grief and pain. Once again the long enduring ties between #Greece and the #US are emphatically revealed”

A probe into the Mati fire is lagging and a number of families are suing the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA-led coalition for its disastrous response in which there was no evacuation plan or order and chaos contributed to the death toll, critics said.
