The failed attempt to overthrow Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July, 2017 has seen 5,786 Turks fleeing to Greece to seek asylum, including eight members of the military who denied taking part in the plot.
The numbers came from the independent news site Diken, which cited Greece’s Ministry of Migration Policy, which said that in October alone there were 706 Turks seeking asylum after Erdogan purged the military and civil service sector and had thousands jailed.
Most of the Turkish nationals seeking asylum in Greece were said to be followers of exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, who now lives in Pennsylvania, who was blamed by Erdogan for orchestrating the attempt to get rid of him.
Turkish officials have accused Greece of becoming a “haven” for coup plotters after rejected Turkish demands to extradite the eight servicemen who were released from detention but are living under police guard on a Greek military installation.
