Letter to the Editor: To Renew or Not to Renew

To the Editor:

Today, I received an invitation to renew my subscription to The National Herald for another two years, and at reduced rate for being early. After some deep thought, I am still undecided as to whether I should. This consideration is NOT against the newspaper, for it has been good. I remember my own Father reading it when I was kid.

As a “native” American of Greek descent, with my three sons second generation and my six grandsons third who retain “our” Hellenic spirit and identity, they as well as I are vanquished not only for the way the current Greek Government has ill-treated and “sold out” “Macedonia,” but more so because so-called “leaders” of the Greek American Community — currently the New York area, gave such a “welcome” to the Greek Ephialtis of the 21st Century, the “Great Alexis” ( thankfully he doesn’t use the glorious name of “Alexander,” which the pseudo-Macedonians will use in the future). Alexis should have been ignored, and protested openly for his treachery.

How can I possibly explain and convince my sons and grandsons to continue their pride for their heritage that my Father, their Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, who fought and was wounded for the freedom of Thessaloniki 106 years ago in 1912 before returning back to America, now that the current Greek Government is selling out Macedonia, and at least New York’s Greek Community “welcomes” the architect?

As AHIPAC National Chairman for 9 consecutive years (1982-1991), I testified annually before numerous congressional committees in support of Hellenic issues: Cyprus, Greece and, yes, Macedonia. This was a non-paid voluntary “labor of love” in seeking justice for the country of our ancestry. Now I am deeply disappointed at the current events, and feel betrayed.

Sincerely,

Dean C. Lomis, Ph.D.
