“We hope that God will help to stop this massive human and ecological disaster, whose consequences are undoubtedly incalculable, and will strengthen the families of the victims, the injured and the affected,” Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said in a statement on Tuesday, concerning the tragic fires in Attica and other areas of Greece.

“In shock we have been watching from the first moments the dramatic developments in the Attica region due to the great fires that are destroying human lives, the residents’ property and burning its vital forest wealth. Our prayers, at this difficult time, are becoming stronger and joining those of his beatitude Archbishop of Athens Ieronymos, the metropolitans of the affected areas and all those that sympathise,” he said.
