The 7th Fava bean festival of island of Schinoussa will begin on Friday, to celebrate the island’s signature agricultural crop, which is also its main farming product. As the president of the association of Schinoussa Nikos Nomikos said to Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Friday, fava “has raised, educated and nourished generations” on Schinoussa.
All the 200 locals are involved in the cultivation of fava, while 20 of them have also proceeded to become involved in processing and packaging the product.
For two days, on Friday and Saturday, the island’s residents, tourists and visitors will be able to join in the annual festival, with events kicking off at 19:30 in the central square of the island’s main village.
The festival includes a photo exhibition on fava farming, there will be cooking and fava tasting also. Afterwards, new chefs will present new original fava recipes and there will be a screening of the film “The Pirates of Schinoussa” with the island’s children playing the main roles, to a script written and directed by Theodossia Papadopoulou. A concert with traditional music will end the first day of the festival.
