NEW YORK – Kostas Antetokounmpo, younger brother of Milwaukee Bucks NBA All-Star Greek Freak Giannis Antetokounmpo, is Mr. Irrelevant in this year’s NBA Draft. The name “Mr. Irrelevant” refers to being chosen last in the draft which took place on June 21 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Dayton forward was almost not drafted at all, CBS Sports reported, noting that Giannis was the number 15 overall pick in his draft year, 2013.
Kostas Antetokounmpo “was selected by the 76ers, but that pick was traded to the Mavericks in a deal for their No. 54 overall pick. So Kostas will be playing in Dallas,” CBS Sports reported.
Being chosen last at the NBA Draft is not as bad as it sounds. Among the top NBA players to have shared the Mr. Irrelevant title is Isaiah Thomas, the former Boston Celtics two-time NBA All-Star who played most recently for the Los Angeles Lakers and is now a free agent.
Thomas “worked hard and eventually went from a sixth man on the bench to the best player on an Eastern Conference finals team,” CBS Sports reported.
Named after the Hall of Fame Detroit Piston’s point guard Isiah Thomas, but no relation, the younger Thomas offered his advice to this year’s Mr. Irrelevant on Twitter, “Whoever is drafted 60th tonight call me right after LOL. I’ll give you the formula to get right!”
There was no indication at press time that Kostas had contacted Thomas, but he already has his brother Giannis’ big footsteps to follow. The first step will be making it onto the Mavericks’ roster and next, making a name for himself on his own terms.
