Kurds Who Escaped Lesbos Detention Center Face Deportation

June 5, 2018

Some 781 Kurdish migrants seeking asylum in Greece could be shipped out unless they return to the detention center they fled in protest over conditions there and delays in processing their applications.

The Migration Ministry issued the warning in a bid to make them go back to the center and said they would not be eligible for asylum unless they do, said Kathimerini.

The Kurds left the center, a place human rights groups said isn’t fit to live in, and moved to a local facility which has better conditions. Some 158 were taken to the mainland but 354 remain at a facility in the former Larso sports arena and 269 at the old PIKPA campsite.

Officials gave the holdouts until June 8 to return to the Moria center, where there have been frequent violent clashes with riot police and between ethnic groups. Data shows there were 6,941 asylum seekers there, in a center designed to hold only 3,000.

There are more than 15,000 refugees and migrants on Greek islands near the coast of Turkey, which keeps continuing to let human traffickers send more in violation of a suspended swap deal with the European Union.

There’s 64,000 in Greece, including on the mainland, abandoned by the EU which closed its borders to them and reneged on promises to help relieve Greece of an overload.
