ATHENS – A notary whose office was vandalized by the rampaging anarchist group Rouvikonas to protest home foreclosures being pushed by the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA said she won’t be cowed and that she wasn’t taking part in seizing primary homes.
Theresia Dalla-Polyzoe put out a statement rejecting accusations she was involved in electronic foreclosures that are being conducted to get around sometimes violent demonstrations against notaries that had been held at courthouses.
Members of Rouvikonas smashed windows and equipment in the notary’s office, and scattered flyers on their way out of the building.
“The specific attack serves other kind of agendas, as there is no chance a main residence has been foreclosed by me. It aims to incriminate in a provocateurish way the protests against foreclosures,” she said, according to Kathimerini.
“I respond to those who attacked my office with hoods and sledgehammers and state that I will not be terrorized and will continue my action to protect the rights of people,” she added.
The group said the attack was done to punish her for allegedly participating in foreclosure auctions.
“Anyone who has a part in the process of evictions, seizures and auctions of working-class homes will also experience a reaction from the bottom,” the group warned in its post. It had done the same to a surgeon it accused of demanding bribes before operating.
The attack came after another earlier in May in which Rouvikonas tore into the offices of British aid organization Oxfam in central Athens and threw paint to protest against a sex abuse scandal affecting the charity.
In a post on an anti-establishment website, the group said the vandalism was a response to recent claims the charity’s aid workers were involved in sexual assaults against children and a subsequent cover-up of the scandal.
It slammed Oxfam for using the millions it has received “to set up the facade of a charity that allowed their members to force their sick instincts on helpless children.”
Eight members of the group were arrested earlier in the month on the Aegean island of Tinos after storming the town hall and throwing fliers to protest an accident in which two garbage collectors were killed when their truck fell off a cliff.
