TORONTO, CA – Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto (Canada), under the Jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, sends a personal message for the celebration of the Nativity of Christ.

“To the faithful people of our Holy Metropolis across Canada,

Christmas is upon us. We will soon celebrate the Nativity of Christ. Let us think about our Lord, Who is the Light of the World, and recall His teachings.

Christ said, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

In recent days, we have heard about the lies and malicious accusations targeted against Greek people across Canada, the Church, your Metropolitan, and many of our Reverend Fathers.

I know that as proud Greek Orthodox faithful, this has hurt you, because it has hurt me too.

Greeks have much to be proud of; as a Church and a community we have made significant contributions to Canada. We should not despair or be ashamed because a handful of individuals purposely disseminate discriminatory information that is injurious to the reputation of Greek-Canadians and the Church.

They will not prevail. They will never prevail. The truth will prevail. Christ will prevail.

As Greek Orthodox faithful, we are called to love one another. Christ said, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you” (Luke 6:27-28), because “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them” (Luke 6:32).

Our Metropolis has always focused on and promoted the importance of love and unity, and together with the trust and support of the faithful, the Metropolis has been able to accomplish great things.

Our Metropolis is a trustworthy organization: it says what it does and does what it says. This is one of the reasons the Metropolis continues to receive large donations year after year (although the accusations have unfortunately made some of our donors sceptical): because it produces results; because it proudly promotes Hellenism and our pure Orthodox faith; because the words and actions of our Metropolis are prudent.

We do not rush to throw mud and denigrate our fellow man; instead, we strive to fulfill the commandments of Christ, to love one another, even our enemies.

Beloved brothers and sisters, the accusations against our Metropolis, your Metropolitan, and some of our Reverend Fathers are fabricated and false. Canada’s justice system will unequivocally vindicate us, because the truth is on our side.

Let us stand straight. Let us stand proud. The Greek Orthodox faithful in Canada have nothing to be ashamed of. Let us not be taken down by the hatefulness of some. Let us love one another and let us celebrate the Nativity of Christ in unity, glorifying our Lord.

With fatherly love and blessings in the Newborn Christ,

Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios”

  1. In my humble Greek Orthodox opinion, the”leaders” of my church think we faithful stewards are stupid!

As my late father-in-law, an immigrant from Greece — who helped build America — would say, σαχλαμάρες.

  2. Just an observation from a non-Greek. When “Hellenism” comes before “our pure Orthodox faith” , I see warning flags. Jesus said that you cannot serve two masters.

From the statement, I gather that Hellenism is different from the Orthodox faith.

As I began my calling as a missionary within a non-Orthodox church, I was instructed to teach Biblical culture, not American culture. How would this instruction apply in this case?

  3. Hellenism and Orthodoxy go hand in hand. The culture of Greek people revolves around namedays and the biggest feast days of all , Christmas , Easter , and the Assumption. The problem with the archdiocese in Canada along with the archdiocese in the US is a simple one and no different than the problems of our federal government both here and everywhere in the world. When people are entrusted in a position where they are responsible for large amounts of money, especially people with no business sense whatsoever their will be greed and corruption. The clergy isn’t immune to this disease anywhere in the world. The temptations the clergy have to go through are very real, when 1 soul (parishioner) leaves the church because of these scandals it is merely 1 person. When a trusted priest is ousted for corruption or acts sexual perversions they take 1000 souls with them from the church. Until we know all the facts we cannot judge what has happened but lawsuit like these cost money and for some individuals to pursue them means their is foul play here and people should be held accountable.

  4. The spin master Sotirios is at it again. ( I cannot call him Metropolitan, forgive me god)

He states, ” In recent days, we have heard about the lies and malicious accusations targeted against Greek people across Canada, the Church, your Metropolitan, and many of our Reverend Fathers.”

With his lie or better yet stretching of any resemblance of truth he is incorrectly implying that accusations are being made against Greek people “across Canada” when indeed the allegations are being made against a few “Greek” people in Toronto ( not against 300,000 Greeks in Canada , 4 priests ( of the 70 or so Greek Orthodox priests in Canada), the Metropolitan and the Metropolis of Canada.

Just because serious accusations are being made against what appears to be a morally corrupt church it does not by default imply that these accusations are being made against all those of Hellenic descent in Canada.

Let a Judge and Jury decide who is telling the truth.

  5. If they have nothing to hide (doubtful) let them be investigated as they are not above the law. This includes “Archcriminal” Demitrios who has yet to give an accounting of the 20 + million dollars that has been squandered. The church is being ruined by these despots. This is why the church looses on average 50000 members per year from attrition and the younger people becoming disillusioned. I ‘ m donating $0 in 2018 until they explain the issues at hand. Hellenism predates Christianity so if you don’t embrace Greek culture and our true roots then you are truly pathetic and an imbecile.
