Dazzling Performances by the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe at the SNFCC, With the SNF’s Support

ATHENS – The Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe came for the first time in Greece to present three unique performances at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), with the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

China’s myths, legends and stories came to life at the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera through the traditional art of Kunqu opera, which incorporates elements of theatre, opera, dance, poetry, music and exceptional costumes creating a memorable experience for the entire family.

On Tuesday, August 29th, The Myth of the White Snake, the troupe’s inaugural show in Greece, was presented with great success to the SNFCC Members. At the full-house Stavros Niarchos Hall, the audience, got swept away by a classic Chinese myth about transformation, with deities, demons and mortals struggling with what is forbidden in love, and what is not.

On Thursday, August 31st and Friday, September 1st, Legends and Stories of China took the audience on a journey into the Chinese tradition and mythology, through the art of Kunqu opera, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the Oral & Intangible Heritage of Humanity with a rich history of more than 500 years.

The Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe (SKOT) that was established in 1978, is a national institution for the Kunqu Opera and is currently under the direction of Gu Haohao, while its first president was Kunqu Maestro, Yu Zhenfei. It consists of a group of outstanding artists with international and national distinctions that have successfully taken part in a variety of competitions and festivals, such as the China Art Festival, Shanghai Magnolia Drama contest and China Kunqu Festival. The Shanghai Kunqu Opera has been recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, according to which SKOT is a “theatrical institution with first-class protagonists, repertoires and performances”.

The performances, as all SNFCC events, are free and open to all, thanks to the exclusive grant of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.The performances are part of the year of Cultural Exchange and Collaboration between Greece and China, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Chinese Ministry of Culture.
