US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland is due to return to Cyprus to give support for the stalled unity talks.
The Cyprus News Agency said it learned from a well-informed source in Washington, the date most likely for Nuland to visit would be Oct. 14.
The US is anxious to get the talks rolling especially as Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci said they want a deal by year’s end although almost all the major obstacles that have kept the island divided since an unlawful Turkish invasion in 1974 remain.
CNA said Nuland won’t exert any pressure but it wasn’t explained how the talks would progress otherwise. It was reported she won’t, as earlier had been projected, also visit Athens and Turkey during her swing.
