Omonia Avoids Scare in Extra Time

Omonia advanced to the Europa League Second qualifying round after defeating Banants 4-1 in extra time. The Cypriot side avoided elimination after losing in normal regulation 0-1 which sent the game to extra time. Omonia will play in the second qualifying round along with AEK Larnaca who overcame Folgore 1-3.

The Cypriots were the heavy favorites to progress to the Europa League 2nd Qualifying Round after their 0-1 win in the first leg in Armenia. But Banants gave Omonia a scare when they took a surprising 0-1 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the 2nd leg. The goal leveled the scores on aggregate 1-1, sending the game into extra-time.

Omonia began to take over the game in extra time with a goal in the 93rd minute from Roushias, giving Omonia the 2-1 lead on aggregate (1-1 on the night). The goal opened Banants’ defense and the Cypriots scored three more goals in the final 10 minutes to progress to the next qualifying round. Next they will play Beitar Jerusalem from Israel.

AEK Larnaca defeated Folgore 1-3 in the second leg in San Marino. AEK Larnaca nearly secured their place in the next round after their 3-0 win in Cyprus in the 1st leg. Folgore took the 1-0 lead in the first half, but 3 goals within 14 minutes in the second half gave AEK Larnaca the 1-3 victory and a place in the Europa League 2nd Qualifying Round. They will play Cliftonville from Northern Ireland.
