NICOSIA- With Cyprus unity talks stalled again, a United Nations border opening on the Turkish line at Deryneia will open before the end of the year.
Sotos Zakhos – a member of the Greek Cypriot technical committee – said that the UN would launch tenders for much-needed road works soon, the Turkish newspaper Famagusta Gazette reported.
“The Turkish Cypriot side has been tasked with ensuring that a three-kilometer road is cleared from their end. The cost of the road will be provided by the EU,” he said.
Turkish media reported that much of the road works in the north have been completed. The crossing will connect Deryneia directly to Famagusta for the first time in 42-years.
The opening of the crossing was agreed last May after a meeting held between President Nicos Anastasiadis and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
The other crossing points in the divided Nicosia are at Astromeritis, Ayios Dhometios, Ledra Palace, Ledra Street, Pergamos, Agios Nikolaos and Limnitis.
