ATHENS – PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata, who supported austerity measures when her party was serving in a coalition government, blasted its former partner the New Democracy Conservatives and the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA as the same.
Gennimata was a Member of Parliament for PASOK when the Socialists were serving New Democracy and voted for the same pay cuts, tax hikes, slashed pensions, privatizations and worker firing she’s now blasting New Democracy and SYRIZA for doing.
“The similarities between the right wing and SYRIZA are no coincidence,” she told a party conference, Kathimerini reported, accusing both New Democracy and SYRIZA of hypocrisy for opposing austerity while out of power but embracing it as soon as they took rule. She didn’t mention she and PASOK did the same.
Former PASOK Prime Minister Costas Simitis said the center left parties have failed to align themselves to take on the right wing and what he called “the so-called Left.”
“Those that do not believe the Right and the so-called Left can achieve a stable economy, functioning democratic institutions and a social solidarity that doesn’t hinge on the desires of unions, must come together,” he said although they never have.
