Deeply Moved by Suffering Caused by Destructive Flames
BOSTON *#8211; The family of California real estate magnate Alex Spanos has donated $1 million to the Archdiocese*#8217;s Greek Fire Relief Fund, the Archdiocese announced late last week.
When making his contribution to the Fund, Mr. Spanos said he and his family were deeply moved by the pain and suffering inflicted by the destructive flames.
*nbsp;*#8220;We watched with heavy hearts the catastrophic fires and the destruction they left behind that affected thousands of people, their property and the beautiful countryside of Greece. I was greatly moved by the tragedy unfolding before my eyes, and I know that every Greek American and every person was equally moved,*#8221; he said.
According to an Archdiocese news release, Archbishop Demetrios of America stated, *#8220;Truly, Mr. Spanos, along with his beloved family, is not simply a man of words, but more importantly of action. We are most grateful to him, Mrs. Faye Spanos and their dear children for this contribution, which will certainly enhance the assistance the Archdiocese will offer to those in need.*#8221;
The Archbishop also stated that, *#8220;no doubt, the noble generosity of the Spanos family speaks highly of their sense of philanthropy. Truly, they are an inspiration for every faithful member of our Archdiocese and the community at-large. I hope and pray that others will follow their example and give according to their means. People who lost everything are depending on our help.*#8221;
Mr. Spanos has also contributed to relief efforts for the victims of the 1986 earthquake in Kalamata, 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina relief, hospitals, institutions of higher learning, and to a number of other charities and charitable causes.
