PAOK beat Borussia Dortmund in Germany on Dec. 10 but wasn’t able to advance in the Europa League soccer tournament and Asteras Tripolis was ousted after losing to Schalke.
Robert Mak’s goal in the first half gave PAOK a 1-0 win, behind the vocal support of some 5,000 Greeks in the stands, said Kathimerini. The Greek team got lucky though as the German side hit the posts three times and goalie Panayotis Glykos stayed on despite a late injury.
PAOK has finished its group in the third position with seven points from six games but didn’t lose to Dortmund in two games against the German supreme team.
Asteras, playing at home, was destroyed 4-0 by the German team Schalke, which got goals from Franco Di Santo, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (two) and Max Meyer.
The result left Asteras with four points in six games, in third above APOEL Nicosia.
The Europa League draw for the round of 32 to take place on Dec. 14 will involve Olympiacos, that was relegated to the second-tier European competition after its loss to Arsenal.
