Greek Americans inNew Yorkhave started an initiative to support the unfortunate inGreecewho have been left most victimized by the deep economic crisis, mainly children, the elderly, and the homeless. This initiative belongs to educator Maria Kratsa, who has is being joined by the Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Community of Corona. Members of the parish, including parish council president Leonidas Korachais, are serving on the Greek Solidarity committee headed by Ms. Kratsa. As Ms. Kratsa noted told the Athens News Agency, “we initially want to gather food to send to people facing serious problems inGreeceas soon as possible. We will cooperate with local institutions and organizations so that this help can be given directly to all those who are truly in need. As soon as this committee receives the appropriate legal status, it will ask major Greek-American organziations to join along in a fundraising campaign to help feed needy individuals and families in Greece. The committee’s role is to coordinate this effort so that individuals and organizations can be sensitized and will join in the effort to assist in this worthwhile effort and actively aid our needy brothers and sisters in Greece.”
