The annual raising of the Greek and American flags, marking the inaugural event of the celebrations culminating in Sunday’s Greek Parade on Fifth Avenue, took place at Friday noon April 16, 2010 in Bowling Green. Presented by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater N.Y. and the Greek Independence Day Parade Committee 2010, the event was dedicated to the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, the Battle of Salamis that was also critical to the survival of Greek democracy and the birth of Western civilization, and the military service of Americans of Hellenic descent.
