A crowd of 300 people attended an event held by the nonprofit organization CYPRECO at the Stathakion Center of Astoria, N.Y. on February 19, 2010. CYPRECO founder/president Elena Maroulleti organized the event, aiming to draw attention to the issue of occupied Famagusta, or Ammochostos. The event was a reminder to the public – in a very important time when negotiations are underway on the fate of the divided island – that Famagusta still exists. And it is still – especially in the case of its largely fenced off, central Varosha district a “Ghost Town”.
