Tom Kourakos, 83, of Queens lost his business (a shoe store) of 54 years in a four-alarm fire on Sat. Feb. 13, 2010 in Jackson Heights. 13 businesses in total were destroyed by the terrible blaze. Investigators believe the fire started at Acme Furniture on 37th Ave. and quickly spread to neighboring businesses. The Buildings Department deemed six of the charred structures to be unsafe and ordered them razed, a spokeswoman confirmed.
