John Anestis was a young bachelor in his 20's when he first started his job as TNH's sportswriter 58 years ago. A grandfather today, at the ripe old age of 86, he looks back on the old days when Greek Americans used to head over the sports stadiums after church on Sundays. As many as three-four thousand fans would show up. "TNH told me that I could write as much as I wanted about Greek American soccer matches, describing the games and commenting upon them," Mr. Anestis said. "There was the Greek American Sports Club back then, which was situated in the German Soccer Federation. We used to play with teams from other nationalities, and we would bring over players from Greece. We had a lot of furriers from Kastoria who would support our club. When a soccer player from the homeland would arrive, they would take him under their wing, give him a job, and pay him well. During our last years, we won championships, and took the U.S. Cup three years in a row.
