A Warning from China

Antonis H. Diamataris  •  05:15 PM, March 04, 2012
As an immigrant to this country, I have great faith in America’s abilities to handle its problems. Faith that rests in its historic path up until today. But I am uneasy over the fact that there is an absence of will on behalf of politicians and the people to handle the problems facing this country, like they once did. (Does this remind you of anything?) Unfortunately, the people refuse to accept the self-evident, which involves raising taxes to lower the deficit. Political partisanship is so great that it obstructs any cross-party cooperation for the sake of the general interest. For instance, Olympia Snowe wrote in yesterday’s Washington Post that “In a politically diverse nation, only by finding that common ground can we achieve results for the common good. That is not happening today and, frankly, I do not see it happening in the near future.” It appears that things really are this way, and another example of this is the way that Republican Senate candidates have been campaigning by engaging in character assassinations attacks against each other. Meanwhile, yesterday, President Obama proudly announced that he had raised $5 million in one night from his appearances in Manhattan. But don’t so many campaign contributions from so few people corrupt the essence of Democracy? And while all this is going on here, China announced that it has decided to lower the amount of reserves it will hold in dollars. This is a “warning” that I hope will awaken everyone.
