Nightmares of the Past

Antonis H. Diamataris  •  03:17 PM, April 13, 2011
Takis Michas, a journalist and Democratic Alliance party member, wrote a commentary in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal arguing that the Greek government is losing control of the country. Most of what Mr. Michas writes is old news to us. There are, however, two points in his commentary that stand out because they describe the situation in Greece with an exceptional degree of overstatement. Mr. Michas notes that "does it surprise you that there are now areas in Greece that are out of the hands of government control?" (He is talking about Keratea). An informed reader who comes across this statement would think that Greece has turned into... Pakistan. Elsewhere he writes that "what we are witnessing does not represent the onset of chaos but organized lawlessness. By spreading pandemonium and forcing Greece to default, Stalinists believe that they will be edging the country closer to revolution." Big words. According to Mr. Michas, hardline leftists' goal is a communist revolution; in other words, a civil war. But is this really so? Is it possible for Greeks to still think this way in the year 2011? A.H.D.
