SNF Saves Our Good Name

Antonis H. Diamataris  •  03:27 PM, April 07, 2011
Most of us have already forgotten about the disaster of epic proportions that has hit Japan; but not the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which saved Hellenism's good name yet again through the donation they made for the victims who were struck by the earthquake and tsunami. It's not only the size of the contribution - $500,000 - that counts, even though this is a sizable amount. It's the fact that somebody care, aid this major effort to help the country return to normalcy, to the degree which that is possible. We thank them... * * * Stephen Cherpelis - fine member of the Greek American Community, a major benefactor, a noble man, a man of honor, patience, and kindness - is being sworn-in as president of the Archdiocesan Cathedral. We are sure that Mr. Cherpelis will do whatever is humanly possible to bring unity to this deeply divided parish community. We wish him the best of luck in this difficult job that he is undertaking. * * * Our newspaper dedicated a front page story to Jerry Delakas - a newspaper vendor in Manhattan with his characteristic Greek fisherman's cap and long hair - whose cries of frustration were heard round the world. I hope that our mayor heard these cries as well and will provide him with a favorable solution to his problem. What is Delakas asking for? He want to keep his news stand "on the corner where he has spent more time than any other spot on the planet." Just how many hours does he spend there a week? Around 85. And he manages to take care of his ill brother as well. Doesn't he deserve it?
