Greece Still on the Hunt for Pension Fraud

AP Photo
Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras leaves the Finance Ministry after an inter ministerial meeting, in Athens Monday, July 2, 2012. Greece's new conservative-led government was formed quickly after June 17 general elections that ended months of political uncertainty, but saw a sharp rise in support for parties opposed to the bailout. The new government is facing more public discontent this summer, when a major round of tax hikes takes effect.
ATHENS – After stopping welfare and pension payments to 200,000 people because they were defrauding the government – or were dead – Greece’s main social security fund, IKA, has begun a second survey of pensioners trying to find any further cases of fraud and find people who are unlawfully claiming retirement pay to which they are not entitled. Until Sept. 28, Greeks claiming a state pension must present themselves at either an IKA office or where they receive their checks, such as post offices and banks, with their pension documents, ID cards and social security number. If they are unable to leave their homes, they must authorize a proxy to present proof they are entitled to the payments.

I wonder how many folks claiming disability of blindness are working as taxi drivers? Only in Greece. Naturally, few if any will ever be brought to Court.
