Answers to Observers Who Wonder: “Who Are Those Greek People, Anyway?”

By Andy Manatos

The world media has made clear that the June 17 Greek election bodes well in the short term for the economies of Greece, Europe, and America. Their reassuring reports indicate that the trusted and able leadership of Antonis Samaras will keep Greece in the Eurozone. But the question still remains, what about the long term? Is there light at the end of the tunnel of Greece’s economic crisis? A major part of the answer lies in the answer to another question the public is asking: “who are these Greek people anyway?”

The recent economic story of Greece the motherland is the story of all socialist nations-they borrow and spend themselves into oblivion. Politicians buy votes by depleting the national treasury. It's unfortunate it went on as long as it did and to the extent it did, but it is what it is. It is time for Greeks to stop looking for the government to take care of them and started recognizing that it's up to each individual and family to take care of themselves. Government should provide a limited range of services which they are good at-and nothing more. And corrupt politicians should not be shielded from justice by idiotic and self-serving laws. It's as simple as that.
