CHICAGO, IL – Every year the nonprofit civic group Friends of Downtown select businesses that represent the best that Downtown Chicago has to offer. The National Hellenic Museum (NHM) was chosen as the best new cultural institution of 2011. The museum, along with other award winners, was recognized at the Friends’ Best of Downtown Awards at Haymarket Pub & Brewery on April 4. “We are honored to be recognized by Friends of Downtown,” said NHM President Stephanie Vlahakis. “We are excited to add a new voice to Chicago’s already rich cultural landscape by sharing the story of the Greek journey from Ancient times to Modern Greek America.” NHM, which opened its doors for the first time in December 2011, has a mission of preserving and exploring Hellenism and to chronicle the Greek-American journey through exhibitions, oral histories, archival collections, and educational programs. Located at the corner of Halsted and Van Buren Streets in Greektown, it is open Tuesday through Sunday.
