Delta Airlines, the only airline with daily direct flights from JFK International Airport in New York to Eleftherios Venizelos airport in Athens Greece has decided to suspend those flights after October 26, 2012.
NEW YORK - Delta Airlines, the only airline with daily direct flights from JFK International Airport in New York to Eleftherios Venizelos airport in Athens Greece has decided to suspend those flights after October 26, 2012.

As soon as Ethnikos Kirix learned of the decision, it contacted Delta, and after being on hold for one hour, a customer services agent confirmed the information, but referred EK to Delta’s Department of Communications.

A Delta spokesman told EK that there was no official announcement at that time. The representative noted EK’s request for additional information and promised to respond as soon as possible.

This is sure to hit Greek tourism even more now. Will flights resume during the summer months in 2013?

This is another nail in the coffin of Greece. Since the country's way in its anti-business stance, has hurt its only 1 remaining profitable business Tourism. It seems Greece wants to fall off the cliff of default. I wonder what will remain after it hits bottom. I pity the poor citizens of Greece.

My understanding is that flights will be suspended during the so-called "off season". See the following: http://www.centreforaviation.c om/news/delta-air-lines-to-sus pend-new-york-jfk-athens-servi ce-leaves-athens-with-no-trans -atlantic-service-152943 Nevertheless, it is still shameful, and unheard of, that there should be no direct flight to Athens from New York from roughly November to March. I have often needed to travel to Greece for family affairs during the winter months, and I am distressed to hear I will have to rely on longer and more tiresome connecting flights moving forward. This is not to mention the many Greek-Americans I know of who travel to Greece for the holiday season. For the first time in 70 years, there will be no trans-Atlantic flights to Athens for close to half of the year. Just the fact that such a major route will not be available non-stop is a new low point indeed and more befitting of a third-world country. It seems the bottom of the barrel has not yet been reached. Κρίμα.

This decision can easily be reversed. It's all about profit. So book your tickets on Delta, buy tickets for your relatives on Delta and tell everyone you know to fly to Greece now on DELTA!

Has anyone seen the price of airfare to Greece on Delta? Sky high! Delta has already profited from us because it's the only non stop flight to Athens. By the way the Delta terminal at JFK is a nightmare. We deserve better. While we are at it the Turkish Airline tickets are cheaper but they take to Constantinople first.....ironic salt to the wound. Hello Greek government and politicians......anybody home??.?

It is unconscionable that there is no media blitz about Greek tourism while ads for Turkey abound, as well as those for Croatia and that place with the plagiarized name. The only Greek oriented TV commercial is for Mama Mia! Getting to Athens will be like a trip to the third world, but no safari at the end. FYI, Continental ran great nonstops to Athens. Now? Gone, too. Who's home? Must be in hiding preparing to desert.

Greek tourism will now start to decrease from the non-Greek sector, due to no direct flights to Greece. Who wants to have to land somewhere else before going to Greece. The travel time from the US was already at 10 plus hours, don't be surprised if it doesn't increase at least another 1 1/2 hours. The cost for the total flight will go up, and people will say is it really worth it. Also the illegal immigration, increase crimes, strikes on the ferry industry will also make question "Is it safe to go to Greece?" with all it present problem and anti-tourist Government. I say I don't want to risk being stranded in Greece with all that around me. So I'll wait until the mess changes in Greece.
