A man eats a meal during a soup kitchen organized by a Greek humanitarian group in Athens' main Syntagma square on Sunday, April 1 2012. Greece's austerity cutbacks have deepened the economic recession, and torn holes in the country's social fabric. Unemployment has hit a record high of 21 percent, and thousands of Greeks depend on church and municipal soup kitchens for sustenance.
NEW YORK –Archbishop Demetrios of America invited the leaders of major Greek-American organizations to the Archdiocese for a discussion about how the community can help Greece during the economic and social crisis. The meeting was held at Archdiocesan headquarters in Manhattan on March 30. After the meeting, which had about twenty attendees, Archbishop Demetrios told TNH “it was a pivotal and substantial meeting. We invited the presidents or representatives of the larger organizations of the community, not just from New York but also cities like Washington. The meeting had a double purpose: First, to share information about the current status of the efforts to help Greece, what each group has done to date. So far there has been a variety of actions, including provision of food and clothing, and the donation of money.”

The best way for we individual Greek Americans to help Greece is to buy Greek products. NOT to send money to the Greek Government in any way, shape or form. They've demonstrated they're not responsible spenders, so why should we support them. But, whenever I shop I go out of my way to buy Greek manufactured products. That way we help grow the private sector in Greece and provide employment opportunities. Buy Greek!
