The Evzones were the elite Greek infantry soldier. Originating from the mountainous districts of Greece, particularly Epirus, the Evzones fought in Greece’s War of Independence, the Balkan Wars, and both World Wars before their regiments were disbanded and retasked with their presidential guard duties. During their time as combat soldiers, they had gained a reputation for courage and endurance.
