ALBANY, NY – The New York State Court of Appeals on January 5 ruled against St. Basil Academy on its long standing dispute with the Garrison school district regarding tuition fees for those of St. Basil children that are not Garrison residents. The unanimous opinion, delivered by Judge Pigott, described that “this appeal presents the question of whether a school district is obligated to pay for the educational costs of the children living in a child care institution located within district boundaries,” and, in affirming the lower court’s opinion, concluded that “a school district is not obligated to provide a tuition-free education to those children determined to be nonresidents of the school district.” St. Basil is located within the Garrison district and primarily houses “Greek Orthodox children whose parents are unable to care for them due to circumstances such as death, abuse, neglect, disability or poverty.

The Archdiocese waists a lot of money on fluff. They should foot the bill to the Garrison school district to educate these students and not expect the local taxpayers to do it.

This ruling makes sense. The Archdiocese has an annual budget of around 25 million dollars. I wonder where in the world all this money is going to? in 4 years the Archdiocese spends 100 million dollars! How is this money justified? And in fact, they are running deficits. What is going on here?

This is about Salt Lake City but i have to post so people will read and learn what is going on.We mailed a petition for a general assembly to the Denver Diocese and also to the Archdiocese and a copy hand delivered by me to the church office. The copy that went to Denver was refused twice.I wrote an email which i will copy paste it here.We need the help from the Archdiocese at once!"To all the clergy that are recipients of this email. Is this how OUR church is governed? Is this The GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH? Does this mean that the people that make the church are not allowed to be heard? I am expecting an answer from the Patriarchate ,Archdiocese of America and the diocese of Denver. Quit being deaf by choice. These priests here in Salt Lake City are destroying the community. Fr. Kouremetis has done it before and is doing it again. Stop him before it is too late for our community".
