NEW YORK – The Greek Day School of the Archdiocesan Cathedral in New York has started the new academic year with new provisions. Specifically for the first time in the last three decades there, is a waiting list for the Kindergarten and also for the smaller grades. The School was established in 1949 and it is housed in the Holy Trinity’s building complex. Five years ago the School was confronted with financial problems, but thanks to the efforts of the School Committee and a huge donation by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the school managed to stay open and to progress. The number of pupils was increased by 33%: from 97 students five years ago to 132 currently, with an expected increase to 150. Currently, 25 instructors teach at the School - which is a 5:1 student:faculty ratio. Progress over the past five years has been made in various academic programs, including the Greek Department. Also, the School introduced the “Singapore math” program this year. In an interview with TNH, School Principal Sonia Celestin spoke about the progress that is vivid today and stated that “I’ve worked here since 1982 and I can say with conviction that over the last few years the progress of the school has been tremendous. For the first time we had a waiting list for the Kindergarten program and also for the small grades. The School was established in 1949 and it is housed in the Holy Trinity’s building
